• What is a wine of 'terroir'?

From history and experience, a concept unique to France, that of ‘Terroir’ emerged. ‘Terroir,’ simply put is the optimum matching of nature (climate, soil, etc.) with nurture (suitable grapes, how to tend then, how to turn grapes to wine, etc.). Thus a good wine in France is a Wine of Terroir.

This concept has existed for centuries among the wine growers but not until the mid 1930’s was it regulated into an official system supervised by a government body: L’Insitut National des Appellations d’Origine (INAO). A wine which passes the stringent regulations of INAO prints Appellation d’Origine Controlée (AOC) on its label.
